Validity, reliability and responsiveness of a French translation of the Western Ontario Osteoarthritis of the Shoulder index (WOOS)

Introduction |
Actuellement, il existe plusieurs questionnaires généraux évaluant les pathologies de l’épaule, mais très peu d’outils évaluent de façon spécifique l’impact de l’arthrose glénohumérale. Le WOOS (Western Ontario Osteoarthritis of the shoulder index) est un questionnaire auto-administré, avec d’excellentes propriétés psychométriques, destiné aux patients souffrant d’arthrose glénohumérale. Il n’existe malheureusement pas, à ce jour, de version française validée.
Objectif |
Produire une version française du WOOS validée adaptée aux populations francophones d’Europe et d’Amérique du Nord.
Matériels et méthodes |
Un protocole validé a été utilisé pour créer un questionnaire WOOS en français (WOOS-Fr). Ont été inclus des patients ayant comme langue maternelle le français, sachant lire le français et avec une arthrose glénohumérale en attente de prise en charge (traitement chirurgical : arthroplastie). Le WOOS-Fr a été comparé au score F-QuickDASH-D/S (Disability of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand – French translation) pour la validité, et des analyses de fiabilité et de réactivité ont été réalisées.
Résultats |
Une version française du WOOS (WOOS-Fr) a été acceptée par un comité multinational. Le WOOS-Fr a été validé avec un total de 71 sujets francophones. Une forte corrélation positive a été déterminée entre le WOOS-Fr et le F-QuickDASH-D/S lors de l’évaluation initiale. L’analyse du coefficient intraclasse (ICC) du score total pour le questionnaire WOOS-Fr a permis de conclure à une bonne fiabilité entre le WOOS initial et le WOOS à 1 semaine (ICC : 0,84 ; IC 95 % : [0,767 ; 0,896] ; valeur de p : <0,001) chez 57 patients. L’étude de la réactivité a montré une grande réactivité entre le WOOS-Fr initial et à un an (moyenne de réponse standardisée (SRM) 1,95) chez les 36 patients opérés.
Discussion |
Une traduction française du questionnaire WOOS a été créée et validée pour une utilisation dans les populations francophones. Ce questionnaire facilitera l’évaluation des résultats psychométriques des patients souffrant d’arthrose glénohumérale dans les milieux francophones.

Introduction |
While several general questionnaires can be used to evaluate shoulder conditions, very few tools specifically evaluate the impact of shoulder osteoarthritis. The WOOS (Western Ontario Osteoarthritis of the Shoulder index) is a patient-reported outcome measure with excellent psychometric properties intended for patients suffering from shoulder osteoarthritis. Unfortunately, there is no validated French version of this questionnaire.
Objective |
Produce a validated French version of the WOOS that is suitable for the Francophone populations of Europe and North America.
Material and methods |
A validated protocol was used to create a French version of the WOOS (WOOS-Fr). Included were patients whose first language was French, who could read French and who had shoulder osteoarthritis destined for treatment (surgical treatment=arthroplasty). The WOOS-Fr was compared to the F-QuickDASH-D/S (Disability of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand – French translation) to assess its validity. Reliability and responsiveness were also analyzed.
Results |
A French version of the WOOS (WOOS-Fr) was accepted by a multinational committee. The WOOS-Fr was validated in 71 French-speaking subjects. A strong positive correlation was found between the WOOS-Fr and the F-QuickDASH-D/S during the initial evaluation. The intraclass correlation (ICC) of the total WOOS-Fr score indicated good reliability between the initial WOOS and the 1-week WOOS (ICC: 0.84; 95% CI: [0.767; 0.896]; p-value: <0.001) in 57 patients. The responsiveness between the initial WOOS-Fr and at 1 year postoperative was high in the 36 operated patients (standardized mean response of 1.95).
Discussion |
A French translation of the WOOS questionnaire was created and validated for use in French-speaking populations. This questionnaire will make it easier to evaluate the psychometric results of patients with shoulder osteoarthritis in Francophone countries.
