Highlights

On educational intervention, a statistically significant increase in the knowledge, attitude and practice scores of students was observed.
Knowledge increased from 74.17±17.063 to 91.06±11.874, attitude increased from 75.92±19.236 to 91.73±12.318 and practice increases from 43.11±22.766 to 82.06±16.149.
Study concludes the effectiveness of educational intervention in a positive impact on the student population with respective to adequate disposal practices for unused and expired medications.
Organizing a series of awareness campaigns and other educational programs could possibly bring a better change among the public.

Summary

Objective

To assess the impact of education among pharmacy students on their level of knowledge, attitude and practices in the disposal of expired and unused medications.

Materials and methods

A pre-test post-test study without control group was conducted in which a total of 573 students pursuing Bachelor of Pharmacy and Doctor of Pharmacy programmes were enrolled. The impact of education provided was analysed with the aid of a previously validated KAP questionnaire. Data on KAP was analysed using SPSS software 24.0.

Results and discussion

The knowledge, attitude and practice of the total students improved from 74.17±17.063 to 91.06±11.87, 75.92±19.26 to 91.73±12.318 and 43.11±22.77 to 82.06±16.149 respectively. The improvement with respect to knowledge and attitude was significantly high among Doctor of Pharmacy students when compared to Bachelor of Pharmacy, with P value<0.001 for both domains.

Conclusion

The present study concludes on the effectiveness of educational intervention in generating a positive impact on the student population with respective to adequate disposal practices to be followed for unused and expired medications.

Objectif

Évaluer l’impact de l’éducation des étudiants en pharmacie sur leur niveau de connaissances, leur attitude et leurs pratiques en matière d’élimination des médicaments périmés et inutilisés.

Matériels et méthodes

Une étude pré-test post-test sans groupe témoin a été menée dans laquelle un total de 573 étudiants poursuivant des programmes de baccalauréat en pharmacie et de doctorat en pharmacie ont été inscrits. L’impact de l’éducation dispensée a été analysé à l’aide d’un questionnaire CAP préalablement validé. Les données sur le CAP ont été analysées à l’aide du logiciel SPSS 24.0.

Résultats et discussion

Les connaissances, l’attitude et la pratique de l’ensemble des étudiants se sont améliorées de 74,17±17,063 à 91,06±11,87, 75,92±19,26 à 91,73±12,318 et 43,11±22,77 à 82,06±16,149 respectivement. L’amélioration en ce qui concerne les connaissances et l’attitude était significativement élevée chez les étudiants en doctorat en pharmacie par rapport aux étudiants en licence en pharmacie, avec une valeur de p<0,001 pour les deux domaines.

Conclusion

La présente étude conclut sur l’efficacité de l’intervention éducative à générer un impact positif sur la population étudiante en ce qui concerne les pratiques d’élimination adéquates à suivre pour les médicaments non utilisés et périmés.
