An Introduction to Burns - 12/10/22
Riassunto |
Burn injuries are often devastating and leave the victim suffering from lifelong sequelae. To optimize care, burn care begins at the time of injury at the start of burn shock and extends through discharge with interventions in scar care and advancements in mobility. There are many dressings that can be used to treat burn wounds, although no dressing can replace surgical excision. Early excision and wound closure with autografting is the “gold standard” of burn care. Burn wounds often result in scarring that can cause contracture, pain, and disfiguration. The members of the Physical Medicine and Rehab (PM&R) team are integral in improving the quality of life of burn patients during and following recovery. This article functions to provide a brief overview of the burn care to the nonburn specialized audience, discuss select advanced burn interventions, and provide an introduction to the role of PM&R in the life of a burn patient.
