La France a depuis plus de 50 ans, une longue tradition de soins et de recherche dans le domaine de l’hypertension artérielle (HTA) à l’initiative de cliniciens chercheurs qui ont su réunir les centres de soins, des laboratoires expérimentaux et des unités de recherche clinique pour initier, soutenir et développer la recherche en HTA. Ces actions structurelles ont permis l’émergence d’une recherche significative puisque près de 20 % de la recherche cardiovasculaire est dédiée à l’HTA avec plus de 50 % des articles provenant de la région du Grand Paris, où la concentration des équipes reste la plus importante. Sur le plan qualitatif les 10 dernières années ont vues la progression du nombre d’articles indexées dans les revues les plus prestigieuses (le top 0.25 %) permettant à la France de se classer au rang du Royaume Uni, ceci représente 1/3 de la production d’excellence des États-Unis.

C’est essentiellement la structuration via les unités INSERM, CNRS et équipes universitaire, la création de réseaux d’excellence et le financement via les organismes de type ANR ou investissements d’avenir qui ont permis cette progression. Cet article fait l’état des lieux de la recherche dans le domaine de l’HTA et propose des pistes pour soutenir le développement de cette recherche.

France has a long tradition in the arterial Hypertension (HTN)-related research field driven by the organization more than 50 years ago of networks of excellence linking clinical facilities (i.e. diagnostic, imaging, biochemistry) to both experimental and clinical research units, thus promoting exchanges, translational research projects and clinical trials.

The scientific production in the field of cardio-vascular research has been increasing steadily since 2000, both for clinical and basic or translational studies and HTN represents nearly 20 % of this production, with more than 50 % of articles issued from the wider Paris area. The quality of scientific production as assessed by top articles (Top 0.25 %) has been increasing in the last 10 years, reaching the level of United Kingdom and representing 1/3 of US production.

These achievements are partly the results of local research units publicly funded, through local or national grants, institutionally supported by universitary hospitals spread throughout the national territory. Most of them are affiliated to the Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale, the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, or Universities. Major breakthrough has been the organization of network of excellence in order to improve recruitment and realization of clinical trial. This paper is a summary of proposals and perspective for the future of research in the field of HTN.
