This article concisely summarizes the assessment and management of acute myocardial infarction. Assessment includes identification of warning signs, risk factors, and initiating events, as well as evaluation of physical examination findings, electrocardiography, and indications for the use of echocardiography, radionuclide studies, and cardiac catheterization. Management includes pharmacologic therapy, use of percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty and mechanical assist devices, and coronary bypass grafting. Management also includes the prevention and management of dysrhythmias and evaluation and treatment of risk factors that can lead to reinfarction.
