Research on the cognitive function of persons with neuromuscular diseases is critically reviewed. Emphasis is placed on Duchenne muscular dystrophy and myotonic muscular dystrophy, as these groups have received the majority of attention by researchers. Implications for psychosocial and educational function are discussed. A general critique of research methodology is provided to assist in interpreting often conflicting findings.
