Disability Evaluation Following Stroke - 05/07/18

Stroke is one of the leading causes of adult disability in the United States and is primarily a condition affecting the elderly. There are, however, younger patients who, after a stroke, return to the work force. This article reviews some of the issues regarding prognosis and timing of disability evaluation in this patient population. Most patients already are retired or go into retirement after stroke. The disability evaluation system used is Social Security; although there are occasions when other systems such as private disability insurance and the American Medical Association guides are used. There, however, is no standardized evaluation system for stroke patients to return to work. This article reviews two cases to illustrate disability evaluations in stroke patients.
