The climate crisis is a global health emergency, posing ethical dilemmas for policymakers, researchers, and clinicians. The nations least responsible for producing greenhouse gases are also the ones whose populations disproportionately suffer from the impacts of climate change. What ethical issues must be considered as we race to stabilize planetary health with respect to disease, access to care, and equity? Do calls for fossil fuel divestment, geoengineering solutions, and private governance align with biomedical ethics? In the clinical setting, the demands on and need for health care have dramatically increased globally, yet care delivery is inadequate in lower- and middle-income countries and is increasingly disrupted by extreme weather events. Research advancements and technology have increased innovation in medical diagnostics and treatment, yet modern medical care is costly from both from a monetary and carbon standpoint and only available to the privileged few. How do we reconcile these disparities as well as the environmental impact of our current care delivery? In this Special Issue of the Journal of Climate Change and Health, we seek international submissions that examine ethical questions at the intersection of climate and health which must be considered to ensure healthy and just adaptation, mitigation, and resiliency worldwide.
