GI stromal tumor presenting as a bleeding gastric ulcer - 23/08/11
Commentary Like the famous song “Just one Look,” originally written and sung by the R and B singer Doris Troy and later covered by the English beat group, The Hollies, and also Linda Ronstadt, all it takes is just one look to know that this ulcer is not of garden variety: large size, rolled hard edges, clot and location tell you this one is trouble. We have come a long way in our appreciation of GI stromal tumors, recognizing they are not the same as leiomyomas and now being able to support the diagnosis by staining for the gain of function proto-oncogene and receptor tyrosine kinase, c-kit (CD 117). This is one ulcer the outcome of which will not be altered by proton pump inhibition. Lawrence J. Brandt, MD Associate Editor for Focal Points |
