Alcohol Spouse-Aided Therapy (ASAT) consists in any psychological intervention in which the marital partner of the patient treated for an addictive behaviour is actively involved in the treatment. The intervention focuses on the psychiatric and/or addictive disorder. In the United States, ASAT is the family therapy with the highest level of evidence for effectiveness, yielding better results than individual therapies. Despite its effectiveness, ASAT has not spread out of research field to everyday clinical practice in the United States and remains widely unknown in France. The objective of this article is to give French professionals an updated knowledge on ASAT through a description of the two best-known protocols for Alcohol Behavioural Couple Therapy. This review provides a summary of theoretical and clinical aspects of ASAT, research on effectiveness, innovation and adaptation for newly aimed populations, and perspectives for further developments.
