The specific problems raised by dental agenesis in DFO treatment have led us to look into the actual prevalence of this condition, its different clinical manifestations, etiology and place in the evolution of mankind, as well as the main available treatments.
The prevalence of agenesis is 5.5% in Europe and 3.9% in the USA, wisdom teeth not included.
The etiology of agenesis is multifactorial with genetic factors being most often responsible.
Analysis of the mechanisms of human evolution and paleoanthropological research tend to show that agenesis is inherent in the variability of our species and is not tending to become more frequent.
The various forms of treatment provided to patients exhibiting dental agenesis are all compromise solutions.
