Introduction |
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic neurological disease characterized by a demyelinating process in the central nervous system.
Psychiatric symptoms, and especially mood disorders, occur more frequently in multiple sclerosis than in other chronic diseases.
Objectives |
To report the occurence, type, MRI abnormalities and management of a bipolar affective disorder prior to the onset of multiple sclerosis.
Methods |
We report a case of a forty-one-years old man, who developed a manic episode induced by antidepressant treatment, four months before the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.
Results |
This case report suggests that bipolar affective disorders may be the initial manifestations of multiple sclerosis.
Conclusion |
The awareness of psychiatric manifestations in unset and acute relapse episodes of multiple sclerosis may be helpful for an early dagnosis and for treatment adjustment.
