As a community-based interface between the population and the healthcare system, emergency medical service (EMS) systems are at the forefront of the epidemic of interpersonal violence in the United States. Prehospital care providers are essentially the only medical personnel who are routinely on the streets and in the homes of victims of violence. As such, they are uniquely positioned to be useful in identifying, reporting, and preventing violence in all of its forms; however, this also puts them at particular risk for becoming victims themselves.
