TRIAGE AND INITIAL EVALUATION OF THE ORAL FACIAL EMERGENCY - 05/09/11
Résumé |
The modern emergency department (ED) sees a significant number of patients every day with problems related to the face and oral cavity. Common reasons for presentation to the ED include trauma, pain, dysphagia, dyspnea, swelling, or rash. The causes of such complaints include blunt, penetrating, and thermal trauma; infections; drug reactions; and neurologic, dermatologic, and other systemic diseases. The orofacial condition can be the sole complaint or a facet of a multisystem presentation, such as in trauma or systemic disease conditions. Crucial to appropriate triage of these patients is attention to the clinically apparent threats to airway, breathing, and circulation (ABCs) and appreciation of the need for re-evaluation for evidence of evolving compromise of the ABCs.
