DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES IN ADOLESCENCE : A Practical Clinical Approach - 05/09/11
Résumé |
Any person who has been sexually active or has a history of sexual abuse or assault is at risk for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) regardless of age, race, or marital status. Of the millions of people who contract STDs each year, at least 3 million are adolescents.6 Because adolescence is the life cycle stage during which sexual activity often begins, screening for STDs should begin at this time. Family physicians and other health care professionals have the opportunity to discuss STD risk and the importance of prevention during every nonemergent office visit. Screening methods and treatment practices that may be particularly helpful are discussed in the text that follows. Social factors that increase the burden of STDs among adolescents are described in the article on “HIV and adolescents,” found elsewhere in this issue.
