Cutaneous laser resurfacing is becoming an increasingly popular method of facial rejuvenation; however, as the patient population becomes more ethnically diverse, laser surgeons are faced increasingly with the challenge of treating darker-skinned individuals for various cutaneous pathologies, despite their inherent risk of permanent pigmentary alterations following treatment. Patients with the darkest skin prototypes have a significantly higher risk of postinflammatory hyperpigmentation and hypertrophic scar or keloid formation following resurfacing with lasers in the mid-infrared to far-infrared range. Despite these risks, an increasing number of reports recently have described laser techniques that are reasonably safe for darker-skinned individuals.
