Despite high-quality evidence and a compelling rationale supporting screening for colorectal neoplasm, most age- and risk-appropriate Americans have not been screened. Understanding the barriers to screening is necessary to designing more effective strategies to increase screening rates. This article summarizes evidence delineating barriers to colon cancer screening. The changes that must be implemented to overcome these barriers are discussed. Finally, implications for primary care practice and potential research questions are addressed.
