Rehabilitative care of multitrauma patients at a United States military hospital during peacetime offers many challenges and rewards. This article reviews the records of patients admitted to Walter Reed Army Medical Center from January 1998 to January 2000 and discusses the referral source, epidemiology, thromboembolism prophylaxis and use of inferior vena cava filters, occult injuries, rehabilitation team, and disposition considerations. The physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist is of great value in preserving the fighting strength of the soldiers, optimizing their recovery, and consequently supporting morale in the United States Army and the Department of Defense.
