Prevalence of symptoms suggestive of asthma in age school children; in Chiclayo Peru - 25/08/11

Rationale |
The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of symptoms suggestive of asthma in age school children of Chiclayo, Peru.
Methods |
We used an standardized written questionnaire of ISSAC (International Study of asthma and Allergies in Childhood) to children of 6-7 and 13-14 years old; in eight schools of Chiclayo, Peru a coastal city in the north with a population of 500,000 habitants 20 m. above the sea. To children of 6 and 7 years old we used the parent self administered written questionnaire.
Results |
We interviewed 1229 adolescents of 13 and 14 years old and the prevalence of wheezing in the last 12 months was 21.1% (260). The prevalence of “ever wheeze” in their life was 41.8% (514). The prevalence of doctor diagnosed asthma was 18.31%. Induced exercise asthma compatible was 32.7% (402). In the group of children of 6 and 7 seven years old the response rate was 82.8% (889). The overall prevalence symptoms were: ever wheezed (29.6%), “ever doctor diagnosed asthma” 34.1%, wheezing in past 12 months 17.7% and exercise induced asthma was 11.7%.
Conclusions |
There is a high prevalence of ISACC based symptoms in age school children of Chiclayo, Peru similar to developed countries.
