Long-lasting effect of sublingual ragweed immunotherapy : A 5 year prospective study - 25/08/11
Abstract |
Rationale |
Allergy to Ambrosia is a disease of growing importance. We aimed to evaluate whether a long lasting effect of SLIT occurs among patients sensitized to Ambrosia, in a prospective, parallel group controlled study.
Methods |
72 adults suffering from rhinitis and/or asthma were divided into 2 matched groups: 38 underwent a 3 year course of SLIT with standardized ragweed extract and 38 received only drug therapy. The patients were evaluated at 3 time points: baseline, end of SLIT, 5-year after its discontinuation, regarding symptoms, drug-intake, SPT, IgE.
Results |
In the SLIT group there was a significant improvement after 5 years of ist discontinuation vs. baseline for the presence of asthma (p<0,001), new allergen sensitization (p<0,001), and drug-intake (p<0,001) whereas no difference was observed in the control group. In the SLIT group 82,3% of patients still maintained the previously achieved benefits after the end of treatment, there was no report about onset of asthma, and only 7,8% of patients undergoing new skin test showed new sensitization.
Conclusions |
SLIT can obtain long-term and protective effect after its discontinuation.
