| EBL has been used to ligate a number of vascular structures, including esophageal and gastric varices, Dieulafoy’s caliber-persistent vessels, Mallory-Weiss tears, blue rubber blebs, angioectasias, postpolypectomy bleeding arteries, and hemorrhoids. Add to this list now the common bleb, a poorly understood but often-seen venous lesion. Bands for ligation today may be neoprene or latex, the latter being leached, washed, and chlorinated to minimize natural latex protein levels, thereby obviating allergic reactions. Persons who are allergic to latex tend to have an increased incidence and severity of allergic reactions to numerous fruits and foods—most commonly avocado, chestnut, banana, and kiwi—but for this particular individual, the only ingesta I would have him avoid is alcohol. |
