Asthma affects an estimated 20 million people in the United States and results in more than 5,000 deaths each year. Despite intensive research, the exact causes of asthma have not been completely elucidated, making treatment of asthma and related symptoms a challenge. However, we do know that complicated interactions between environmental, social, and genetic factors are involved in increasing a person's risk for asthma, and that other factors such as race, ethnicity, age, and sex add an additional layer of complexity in disease etiology.
