Preface - 20/04/11
New imaging modalities, surgical techniques, and an explosion in knowledge from scientific and genetic research make the practice of retina ever changing, and stresses and demands in health care provide additional challenges to the vitreoretinal specialist.
Retinal Detachments addresses the needs of the busy vitreoretinal surgeon caring for both the adult and pediatric patient. This comprehensive compendium written by an accomplished group of vitreoretinal retinal surgeons, led by Dr. Georges Caputo, is presented in 4 sections with instructive diagrams throughout that address pathogenesis and treatment. The availability of both a printed format and a downloadable electronic version enables easy access of information locally and worldwide to optimally and promptly address the needs of the patient.
The first section provides fundamental knowledge of the embryology, anatomy, and physiology of the retina and vitreous and extends from the normal to the pathologic genesis of retinal breaks, detachments, and vitreous conditions, such as proliferative vitreoretinopathy. The second section covers current recommendations, imaging and equipment for diagnosis and treatment in the office and operating suites, techniques involving laser, cryotherapy, gas injections, buckling methods, multiple gauge vitreous surgery, internal tamponades, dissection techniques, endoscopy, pharmacologic vitreolysis and combined surgical techniques. Included is a complete segment devoted to the recognition and management of complications. The third section deals with forms of rhegmatogenous detachments, from simple breaks to giant tears, retinoschisis, and traumatic, tractional and exudative detachments. A fourth section provides the current management of pediatric retinal detachments including those from developmental abnormalities, genetic conditions, and prematurity. This special section addresses a segment of the population with unique needs in surgical evaluation, diagnosis and management that are separate from the adult patient, thus making Retinal Detachments of particular value.
Drs. Caputo and his team are to be congratulated for this book, which is a most valuable addition to the vitreoretinal specialist, as well as to the general ophthalmologist, who cares for adult and pediatric patients with vitreoretinal diseases.
