Résumé |
A decline in psychodynamic psychotherapy training in graduate medical education raises questions about its place in contemporary psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatric training. Challenges faced include time constraints, personal interests, lack of supervisors, emphasis on managed care, and the rapid shift toward psychopharmacology. Manualized psychodynamic psychotherapy treatments have evolved to mitigate these challenges and offer a short-term, structured, and evidence-based approach, which has shown success in improving behavioral outcomes. These tools offer utility in residency training requirements. Regulation focused psychotherapy for children, mentalization focused psychotherapy for children, and transference-focused psychotherapy for adolescents are positioned to accomplish these goals.
