Summary |
The COVID-19 era marked one of the most alarming periods in history. In 2020, medical science had limited knowledge about the virus, leading to escalating morbidity and mortality rates. Consequently, many individuals turned to herbal medicines for potential solutions. The composition of these herbal remedies remained unknown during that period. Unfortunately, many of them contained hazardous heavy metals such as arsenic. In countries like India, where a substantial portion of the population relies on herbal treatments, incidents of exposure to toxic heavy metals have surged. We report a case series in which a family of five members consumed herbal medicine for COVID-19 prevention, inadvertently causing arsenic toxicity in the entire family. The ingredients of herbal remedies remain undisclosed and can lead to poisoning if not identified promptly, thus timely diagnosis is crucial. This case series showcases the diverse challenges linked to herbal products, underlining their potential influence on the causes of patients’ morbidity and mortality.
