Fatal dog attack: A combination of penetrating and blunt injuries in the neck - 12/11/24
Summary |
Dog bites are becoming increasingly worrying because they can lead to death due to the severity of the injuries in addition to the risk of rabies contamination. This report aims to present a forensic approach of a 62-years woman who was the victim of a sustained attack by her pet dog, an American Akita. The investigation of the death scene, the autopsy findings, and the correlation with radiologic data achieve the identification of the main fatal neck injury. These fatal dog attacks are experienced dramatically but often treated as “miscellaneous facts” in society and social media while preventive measures and primary care should be better spread. Understanding these fatal injuries, and reviewing the literature, provides insight into the dog's behavior and raises suspicion of the tissue damage hidden beneath the scratch marks allowing, whenever possible, for urgent rescue of the victim.
