Expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule (PECAM-1/CD31) in intestinal tuberculosis - 05/08/22
Highlights |
• | Epithelioid cell granulomas have hypoxic microenvironment acting as a stimulus for angiogenesis. |
• | The significantly increased number of vessels were seen in the granulomatous areas compared to non-granulomatous areas indicating the role of neo-angiogenesis in disease pathogenesis. |
• | VEGF expression was markedly reduced in the mucosal epithelium of granulomatous area suggesting defective VEGF production by the intestinal epithelium making it prone to injury. |
• | Altered vasculature of the granuloma associated vessels might be a potential therapeutic target for intestinal TB in future, in conjunction with anti-tubercular treatment. |
