Homeopathy, a new tool for the prevention and treatment of chemobrain (cerebral chemotoxicity) - 13/03/20
Summary |
Context |
Not well known and rarely mentioned, cerebral chemotoxicity is at the root of the symptoms most frequently reported by patients. Fatigue, sleep, mood and memory disorders have the common etiology of inflammatory and pro-oxidative brain lesions secondary to cancer itself and to its treatments. Faced with these “orphan” symptoms what are homeopathy's possible responses?
Method |
An electronic repertorisation taking into account the physiopathology, the etiology and the specificity of the symptoms has been carried out. The results obtained are compared with the available clinical studies, the Materia Medica and our experience.
Results |
Preventatively Belladonna, Nux vomica, Phosphorus, Aconitum, Arsenicum album and Mercurius solubilis are the most indicated medicines. They will be chosen after individualisation of symptoms and prescribed two to three times a day, the day before, on the day of the treatment and the day after each chemotherapy session. Curatively, Conium maculatum and/or Baryta carbonica can also be considered. Our daily clinical experience confirms that these prescriptions are helpful.
Conclusion |
Preventing and treating cerebral chemotoxicity is a major challenge to improving the quality of life of patients and promoting adherence to treatment. Homeopathy, by its lack of both drug interaction and significant side effects, has its place in this indication. Clinical studies are needed to evaluate its effectiveness.
