Injuries to the tissues of the musculoskeletal system present major clinical challenges to sports medicine physicians. In many cases, this reflects the poor intrinsic healing capacity of most of these tissues. This article argues that gene therapy should be able to initiate a healing response in those circumstances where one is lacking to accelerate the rate of repair and to improve the quality of the repaired tissue.
