This article defines family-centered practice and its application to the assessment and intervention process for children with communication disorders. This article addresses issues of the relationship between communication development and development of mental health, as well as the impact of poverty on these areas. Specific examples of family-centered assessment and intervention procedures are provided. The role of the family as agents in literacy development in preparing their children for school is discussed. Suggestions for areas for and types of collabo-ration between communication disorders and mental health professionals are offered.
