Developmental evaluations are aimed at providing important information about the child: acquired skills for dealing with environmental demands, developmental strengths and weakness, and manner of approaching tasks and problems. The role of developmental assessment as part of the comprehensive psychiatric assessment of young children is reviewed. Some of the more common assessment instruments are highlighted. Guidelines are provided for clarifying referral questions, generating developmental hypotheses, selecting appropriate assessment tools, and interpreting findings.
