Summary
1. | The development of newer type ointment bases, particularly the emulsion bases and the soluble bases, has led to new concepts of ointment therapy. |
2. | On the basis of their degree of penetration, ointments can be classified as epidermic, endodermic, and diadermic. |
3. | For a rational understanding of the applicability of the different types of ointment bases, the pediatrician needs a sound knowledge of the histopathologic factors underlying the more common dermatoses encountered in children. |
4. | Accordingly, some of the newertrends in topical dermatologic therapy have been described and explanation given of the use of the newer bases to obtain optimum therapeutic effect. |
5. | The skin must be recognized asa functioning organ and a barometer of general health. |
6. | It is hoped that this paper willbe useful to pediatricians and to general practitioners in their routine care of children and that it will stimulate interest in the use of official agents. |
