New information for living kidney donor candidates (abstract) - 01/06/16
Résumé |
For the millions of people with kidney failure worldwide, the importance of transplantation cannot be overstated. Tragically, many patients who would benefit from a kidney transplant do not receive one. The number of people in need of a transplant continues to rise, and there are too few deceased donors to meet the demand. Worldwide, countries are urged to meet the demand for transplantable kidneys by increasing living kidney donor activity. Concurrent efforts to understand and study long-term donor health are vital to a safe system of practice.
In this session, we will review:
– the new 2016 Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) guidelines in living kidney donation [1 ];
– a new modeling technique which provides an empirical framework to assess risk in living donor candidates [2 ];
– several recent studies examining long-term outcomes after living kidney donation [3 ].
